Future Earth

The biological and geological future of the Earth can be extrapolated based upon the estimated effects of several long-term influences. These include the chemistry at the Earth's surface, the rate of cooling of the planet's interior, the gravitational interactions with other objects in the Solar System, and a steady increase in the Sun's luminosity. An uncertain factor in this extrapolation is the ongoing influence of technology introduced by humans, such as climate engineering, which could cause significant changes to the planet. The current Holocene extinction is being caused by technology and the effects may last for up to five million years. In turn, technology may result in the extinction of humanity, leaving the planet to gradually return to a slower evolutionary pace resulting solely from long-term natural processes.

Over time intervals of hundreds of millions of years, random celestial events pose a global risk to the biosphere, which can result in mass extinctions. These include impacts by comets or asteroids with diameters of 5–10 km (3.1–6.2 mi) or more, and the possibility of a massive stellar explosion, called a supernova, within a 100-light-year radius of the Sun, called a Near-Earth supernova. Other large-scale geological events are more predictable. If the long-term effects of global warming are disregarded, Milankovitch theory predicts that the planet will continue to undergo glacial periods at least until the Quaternary glaciation comes to an end. These periods are caused by eccentricity, axial tilt, and precession of the Earth's orbit. As part of the ongoing supercontinent cycle, plate tectonics will probably result in a supercontinent in 250–350 million years. Some time in the next 1.5–4.5 billion years, the axial tilt of the Earth may begin to undergo chaotic variations, with changes in the axial tilt of up to 90°.

During the next four billion years, the luminosity of the Sun will steadily increase, resulting in a rise in the solar radiation reaching the Earth. This will result in a higher rate of weathering of silicate minerals, which will cause a decrease in the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. In about 600 million years from now, the level of CO2 will fall below the level needed to sustain C3 carbon fixation photosynthesis used by trees. Some plants use the C4 carbon fixation method, allowing them to persist at CO2concentrations as low as 10 parts per million. However, the long-term trend is for plant life to die off altogether. The extinction of plants will be the demise of almost all animal life, since plants are the base of the food chain on Earth.

In about 1.1 billion years, the solar luminosity will be 10% higher than at present. This will cause the atmosphere to become a "moist greenhouse", resulting in a runaway evaporation of the oceans. As a likely consequence, plate tectonics will come to an end, and with them the entire carbon cycle. Following this event, the planet's magnetic dynamo may cease, causing the magnetosphere to decay and leading to an accelerated loss of volatiles from the outer atmosphere. Four billion years from now, the increase in the Earth's surface temperature will cause a runaway greenhouse effect. By that point, most if not all the life on the surface will be extinct. The most probable fate of the planet is absorption by the Sun in about 7.5 billion years, after the star has entered the red giant phase and expanded to cross the planet's current orbit.

Air Force One-Point-Three

After a quarter-century of service, the aging presidential airplanes are being replaced by a pair of state-of-the-art Boeing 747-8s.

There's a new Air Force One on the way, and it's about time. The beat-up pair of modified 747s that have been hauling the world's most powerful passenger for 25 years are reaching the end of their useful lifespans, and are set to be replaced.
The presidential planes are renowned for the tech specs of their interior cabins, which allow a globe-trotting commander-in-chief to run the country, and even manage a war, virtually the same way he would in the White House. But their fuselages are hardly state-of-the-art.
The Air Force announced this week that it had picked the next model for its flying fortress: a Boeing 747-8 with a tail the height of a six-story building and which,according to the company's "fun facts," can carry more than $5 billion in solid gold bars from Fort Knox. (Heaven forbid the need arises...) It'll be the first complete upgrade for Air Force One since the current planes arrived in 1990 and 1991.

"I’m surprised they haven’t replaced it before now," said John Haigh Sr., a former chief steward of Air Force One who was aboard the plane that now shuttles President Obama when it first carried President George H. W. Bush in 1990. As many trivia buffs know, Air Force One is a military call number given to any aircraft carrying the sitting commander-in-chief. There are actually two identical presidential planes, and when the president takes an overnight trip, the back-up aircraft is always within a 30-minute trip away "in case there's a problem with the primary airplane," Haigh said.

The new planes won't be ready until after Obama leaves office, and an Air Force spokesman said Friday the military expects that at least one of the two current models will still be in use in 2025, when it would carry the 46th or 47th president. That would be well past the end of its officially-projected 30-year lifespan, which only extends through 2017. With inspections before every trip, Air Force One is probably the best-maintained plane on earth, but even the military acknowledges the fleet is suffering from obsolete parts and "increased down times for maintenance" that will only get worse in the coming years.

When the new Boeing 747-8s arrive, what will happen to the current planes? The Air Force hasn't decided yet. The old pair of 707s that preceded this fleet were used for several years as a hand-me-down for non-presidential VIPs. In 2001, one of them was delivered to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif. The other plane, which carried John F. Kennedy's body back to Washington after his assassination in 1963, is on display at the National Museum of the Air Force in Ohio.

It may be newer and far more powerful, but the Boeing 747-8 isn't a radical redesign from the current planes, which themselves are customized 747-200Bs with the military designation of VC-25A. And the 747-8 has been around in some form for nearly a decade, although the latest versions debuted only in the last few years. The military won't say exactly what new technology will go into the interior other than it'll have "global, enduring, survivable command and control capability." (Sadly, there probably won't be a presidential escape pod like the one Harrison Ford used in the movie.)
Boeing boasts that it's "cleaner, quieter, and emits less greenhouse gas" than any other 747. In reality, though, the years-long hunt for a new Air Force One wasn't much of a competition. The military needs a four-engine aircraft that meets its size and weight, electrical power production, and safety requirements. After conducting market research, officials concluded the only other option was the Airbus 380, which is made in France. Due to the highly classified decisions that go into designing the presidential plane, it has to be manufactured domestically. That's not to mention the PR disaster that would follow the outsourcing of Air Force One. As Haigh put it: "We need the president's plane to be made here."
The government already endured a procurement controversy during the development of a much larger fleet of new Marine One helicopters. The Obama administration canceled its original contract after the price tag ballooned to more than $13 billion, and the cheaper choppers now won't arrive until 2020 or later. The $1.65 billion budget for the next Air Force One is expected to grow, but significant delays may be a bigger concern than a cost overrun. After 25 years of service and millions of miles in the sky, the president's current planes are old enough as it is.

The Cars In The Future

  An ambitious firm has revealed their plans for a new type of personal air transport vehicle that takes off and lands like a helicopter. Will the idea fly?

I received an email this week from a researcher based in Los Angeles, who I wanted to interview. “I hope to be back before 4pm,” it read. “Of course, if I had a flying car I could better negotiate the LA traffic congestion and be back earlier.”

An unusually imaginative response, you might think. In fact it was pretty apt as I wanted to ask him about the future of personal transportation, and the sender was Professor Mario Gerla, who studies traffic congestion, pollution and intelligent transport at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Many of us have wished for a personal flying machine to lift us out of infuriating traffic jams and deposit us on our driveways. With recent advances in materials, power sources, and automation, those dreams may become reality more quickly than many of us realise, as I’ve discussed before. Earlier this month, US aerospace start-up Terrafugia unveiled the TF-X, a concept design for a radical new type of personal air transport vehicle. So I talked to Carl Dietrich, co-founder of the company, to find out how it might work.

“We think this is the right time to start seriously looking at the challenges associated with creating what people call a flying car," he says. "The vision is to try to create the future of personal transportation that people have dreamed about for years." Dietrich believes all the required technology already exists, and that initial discussions with the US Federal Aviation Administration suggest existing regulatory obstacles can be overcome.

Terrafugia is just one of a number of companies proposing personal aviation and it has been taking orders for an earlier design – the Transition, a road-legal aeroplane with foldable wings – for several years. The TF-X design is more futuristic, but is more likely to provide what most of us dream of when we think of flying cars.

One of its main selling points is the ability to take off and land vertically like a helicopter. In car mode, the plug-in hybrid can rely on its electric motors and battery packs. For lift-off it needs extra power from its hydrocarbon combustion engine. Folded winglets are extended. Two huge motor pods on either side of the vehicle are pointed vertically up, and the propellers provide lift. Each pod has 16 independent electric motors, with its own controller and battery pack, meaning a failure is not catastrophic.

When it attains the required altitude the pods start to point forward. A ducted fan at the rear provides thrust and the wings start to operate as a conventional aerodynamic surface to provide lift as it accelerates. At full speed the propellers on the ends of the pods fold back and the vehicle enters “cruise” mode. The TF-X has a maximum speed of 200 miles per hour and a proposed range of 500 miles.

Off-road visions

“With electric propulsion we can go to much higher levels of what we call parallel system architecture, so a given failure of a battery, or a motor controller, or even a motor itself, would not necessarily result in total loss of propulsive capability,” says Dietrich. “One of the big advantages of going to electric-powered aircraft is that there is the opportunity to change the system architecture away from what’s been typical in aviation to date where you have one, two, or four engines tops,” he adds.

“It’s definitely an interesting proposition,” says Dr Frank Nieuwenhuizen, Aerospace Engineer at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, and one of the people behind the EU MyCopterproject that looks at how the air transport industry might change over the next century. “The vision takes parts of what we think is important for a personal air transportation system, like the vertical takeoff and landing feature for example.”

However Nieuwenhuizen cautions that futuristic visions are not enough to get flying cars off the drawing board. “It’s not just the vehicle, it’s the complete system that has to be set up for something like this to be useful. Acceptance is a big part of it, and that’s where a lot of work still needs to be done in terms of what will actually happen when something like this becomes available. Would people want such a flying vehicle above their homes all the time?”

Mario Gerla likes the idea but warns the concept has significant hurdles to overcome. "We always think how nice it would be if we're stuck in a traffic jam, to all of a sudden, just take off from the road pavement and go where you want," he says. "I can understand the idea of flying from airport to airport, folding the wings and becoming a car. In the air, you're just one more plane. But if you take off from your parking lot and fly a few blocks away, it is more like a helicopter. It becomes much more flexible, and interesting, but maybe dangerous."

Terrafugia originally hoped to be shipping its less radical Transition in 2009, but now says the first customers will take delivery sometime in 2015 or 2016. As for the TF-X, Dietrich acknowledges the concept is a long way from becoming airborne, but he says discussing the idea early is a way to shorten the time it will take to make it a reality, which he currently estimates as between eight and 12 years.

“We’re a small company," he says. "We do have expertise in developing flying/driving vehicles now, but we haven’t developed an electric powered aircraft before. That’s a reason to take the concept public – to find potential development partners.”

Reservations are being taken for the TF-X, although its price tag has not yet been revealed. It's a fair bet that it'll cost more than the quoted $279,000 that the Transition will set customers back by.

But even those of us unlikely to be able to afford the first personal flying cars when they become available will benefit thanks to our early-adopting neighbours, says Gerla, who as a result may be able to get home from his office at UCLA more quickly.

“If you could levitate just some of these cars, fly them through the air and deposit them somewhere else, you could remove some of the major road congestion,” he says. “Just removing 10% or 15% of the cars would help it all flow again.”

This solution claims to improve customer service, maximise convenience, increase product choice and cut queuing times – all while lowering costs for the vendor

 Picture the scene. You're on your way home when you remember the fridge is empty but you don't have a pound for the trolley and parking is a nightmare. Or you promised to pick up a six-pack of beer en route to a friend's party but it's pouring with rain and parking is still a nightmare.

Wouldn't it be great if you could pick up a few essentials without getting out of your car?

Russian inventor Semenov Dahir Kurmanbievich filed a patent for a drive-through supermarket that would make all that possible.

A customer would drive up to an available bay, much like in a petrol station, and – while remaining in the car – select the items from a column that has vertically rotating shelves operated with a button. These are placed immediately onto a conveyor belt, where they travel a few feet to the checkout. When finished, the customer drives forward, pays the cashier and drives off with dinner.

In his patent application, Mr Kurmanbievich said the invention is directed at "solving the technical problem of improving the quality of customer service while providing maximum convenience and choice of products, reducing time to service customers, cutting the queue time and lowering the time and costs from commercial enterprises associated with the filing and layout of goods in the sales area where there are buyers".

So-called drive-through supermarkets have already been trialled by retail giants Walmart and Amazon, but these operate more like click-and-collect services as customers have to order their goods online between two hours and three weeks in advance.

The supermarket sector has seen significant upheaval recently, withstalwarts such as Tesco losing market share to discount grocers and traditional retailers struggling in the face of internet shopping and other technological innovations.

While the drive-through supermarket would need a lot of space and infrastructure investment to get off the ground, it would combine the consumer's convenience and speed of buying groceries online with the vendor's sales opportunities that come with product discovery on store shelves.

Mungkin saja material itu akan lebih hebat dari intan, bahkan sangat ringan, bisa tahan dari segala cuaca baik panas ataupun cuaca yang sangat dingin, dan masih banyak kelebihan-kelebihan yang ada pada nanoteknologi kemungkinan aplikasinya pun akan sangat lebih dhasyat.

Dengan kecanggihan nanoteknologi yang mungkin akan dapat menciptakan robot yang berukuran kecil (Nanobots) dan dapat memasukkannya kedalam tubuh manusia yang dapat menyembuhkan segala penyakit bahkan menghancurkan sel-sel kanker juga memperkuat tubuh manusia. Bahkan akan diperkirakan juga jika nanobots (Nanoparticles) dapat menutup kembali lubang - lubang ozon. Supercomputer pun bisa menjadi seukuran korek api dan menyimpan jutaan gigabyte informasi di seluruh dunia.


2.     Manusia – Manusia Super, Rekayasa Genetika





    Manusia telah berhasil memetakan gennya pada proyek raksasa “The Human Genome Project”. Dengan ini manusia dapat mengetahui tiap gen dalam tubuh manusia dari bentuk manusia, penyebab penyakit, gen yang membentuk ingatan, yang menciptakan kecerdasaan otak, juga gen khusus yang mengatur penuaan.

Rekayasa genetika memungkinkan dapat melahirkan manusia masa depan yang lebih unggul lagi dan berumur lebih dari 100 tahun (1 abad) lamanya. Jika saja manusia yang dapat mengetahui gen kecerdasan special dari ilmuwan – ilmuwan ternama yang sangat cerdas.

Tidak hanya pada manusia saja rekayasa genetika dapat di uji coba, pada tumbuhan dan hewan pun dapat dilakukan rekayasa genetika. Pada tumbuhan seperti tumbuhan pertanian akan membuahkan hasil yang sangat bagus dan baik berkali-kali lipatnya. Jika pada hewan, akan menghasilkan daging yang berkualitas dagingnya.




3.    Energi Terdahsyat di seluruh Alam Semesta, The Power of the Stars



Matahari selalu mengeluarkan energi setiap detiknya yang digunakan seluruh manusia sepanjang sejarahnya. Energi plasma hidrogen raksasa sebesar 380 Milyar Mega-Watt (380^26MW) per detik. Dikenal dengan energi Fusi Nuklir, The Power of The Sun. 

Di kota kecil Cadarache ujung selatan Perancis dilakukan percobaan besar dengan sebuah proyek yang bernama ITER. Dengan panas yang mencapai 150 juta derajat celcius, nyaris 10 kali panas inti Matahari atom Deuterim dan Tritium disini dileburkan. Wadah peleburannya ttidak dapat meleleh dikarenakan dilindungi medan magnet Tokamak. Deuterium dapat dihasilkan dari air laut dan Tritium dapat di bentuk dari lithium dari batu alam.

Energi ini akan sangat efisien dan besar manfaatnya bagi setiap manusia karena energinya yang begitu ramah lingkungan.


4. Regenerasi Wolverine, Stem Cell

Seandainya, segala penyakit yang ada pada tubuh manusia bahkan penyakit yang ganas dapat disembuhkan akan membuat hidup kita terasa nyaman dan kesehatan pun sangat sempurna.

Tahukah kalian salah satu komik yang berjudul “X – Men”, pasti tahulah tentang tokoh superhero yang ada dalam komik tersebut yang bernama Wolvarine. Jika tertusuk benda tajam atau semacam pisau, lukanya akan segera sembuh dan nyaris tanpa bekas. Karena dia dapat meregenerasikan seluruh sel-sel tubuhnya dengan sempurna. Sayangnya itu hanya sebuah cerita dalam khayalan saja.

Jika dikehidupan nyata atau dunia kita, ada cacing yang bernama “Planaria Worm” yang hidup di laut maupun di sungai. Cacing tersebut dapat menumbuhkan kembali seluruh tubuhnya. Meskipun tubuhnya terpotong kecil dan hanya tubuhnya yang tersisa, bahkan kepalanya hilangpun, dia dapat menumbuhkannya lagi.

Jika cacing saja dapat melakukannya, kita sebagai manusia pasti juga ingin dapat mengganti sel-sel yang rusak dengan sempurna dan dapat menyembuhkan kembali luka-luka dengan cepat. Teknologi biology molekuler bernama Stem Cell atau Sel Induk nyaris saja dicapainya oleh para ilmuwan. Sel dasar ini dapat merubah atau dirubah menjadi sel atau organ di tubuh manusia.

Stem Cell sangat revolusioner bagi kesehatan setiap manusia di seluruh dunia, terutama bagi kesehatan manusia itu sendiri.


5.    Komputer Kuantum


Jika saja komputer masa depan mempunyai kecepatan lebih besar dari supercomputer sekarang pasti itulah yang diinginkan setiap manusia, berkali-kali lipat lebih cepat dari IBM “Roadrunner” di Los Alamos yang kecepatannya 1.7 petaflops (1 petaflops = 10^15 operasi per detik).

Komputer kuantum sangat dahsyat karena diciptakan dengan menggunakan fenomena keajaiban dunia kuantum, Superposition dan Quantum Entanglement. Jika kita ingin memecahkan kode yang digitnya 140, akan butuh waktu yang sangat lama. Tapi hanya dengan komputer kuantum, akan dapat dipecahkan hanya dengan hitungan menit saja. Dan komputer ini nantinya akan dapat digunakan untuk memprediksikan cuacau di bumi juga gejala-gejala alam yang dapat diketahui berbulan-bulan sebelumnya. Begitu canggihnya dan hebatnya kegunaan dan kelebihan komputer kuantum ini.


6.    Jubah Menghilang Harry Potter, Metamaterial
Pastinya tahu kan kalian film Harry Potter! Masih ingat jubah yang digunakan oleh Harry Potter untuk menghilang dan tidak terlihat oleh mata manusia biasa. Kali ini para ilmuwan ingin menciptakan metamaterial canggih seperti jubah menghilang seperti milik Harry Potter. 

Banyak yang bilang tidak akan ada matematerial yang canggih di dunia, karena menyalahi alam semesta ini. Tapi para ilmuwan ingin meyakinkan dengan menciptakan metamaterial canggih.

Hal ini dapat dilakukan, contohnya radiasi elektromagnetik yang dapat dibelokkan dengan menciptakan material artifisial. Cahaya mampu dibelokkan oleh Metamaterial, berkeliling pada obyek-obyek yang diselimutinya. Penelitian di Perdue University, mereka menggunakan jarum khusus yang digunakan untuk membelokkan cahaya lalu obyek dibelakangnya akan terlihat.

Material ini sedang diteliti di seluruh dunia termasuk di MIT, University of California Berkeley, Duke University, dan Caltech di LA.


7.    Space Elevator, Tangga Menuju Bintang – Bintang 

Space Elevator atau Tangga Luar Angkasa bisa dibilang seperti lift pada umumnya, akan tetapi bedanya adalah pada tempatnya. Jika lift yang kita ketahui yaitu lift yang ada di mal-mal besar, tetapi Space Elevator adalah lift yang bisa dibilang lift tertinggi dan terpanjang karena bisa mencapai luar angkasa. Dari bumi menuju orbit luar angkasa yang tingginya mencapai 35.000 kilometer. Dengan adanya lift ini, kita tidak harus mengeluarkan biaya yang mahal. 

Kebanyakan orang mengharapkan program ruang angkasa yang tadinya berhenti sampai dibulan karena biayanya yang sangat mahal dapat dimulai kembali. Dan juga mungkin dapat pergi ke Planet Mars.

Karena kehebatan Carbon Nanotube hal ini dapat terwujudkan, karena material ini lebih kuat dari sebuah intan. Akan ada era baru suatu saat nanti dalam penjelajahan ruang angkasa.


8.    Memasuki Era Hiper-Sonik, Scramjet

Dunia transportasi akan menjadikan Scramjet sebagai revolusi terbesar pada sejarahnya. Raptor milik Amerika  F/A-22 menjadi pesawat tempur tercanggih saat ini di dunia dengan kecepatannya maksimal Mach 2 atau 2 kali kecepatan suara. Sedangkan pesawat Scramjet akan terbang dengan kecepatan 10 kali kecepatan suara, Mach 10.

Jika kita sedang tinggal di New York dan ingin pergi ke Tokyo menempuh waktu yang cukup lama yaitu 18 jam (1080 menit), jika di tempuh dengan menggunakan pesawat Scramjet waktu yang ditempuh hanya 120 menit. 

Bahan bakar yang digunakan pesawat ini bukan bahan roket yang sangat mahal dan berat, bahan bakarnya menggunakan hidrogen cair dicampur dengan penyedotan oksigen langsung dari atmosfer. 


9.    Fountain Of Youth, Resveratrol

Suatu saat nanti kita pasti akan menemukan suatu cara yang akan membuat kita hidup dalam waktu yang cukup lama bahkan bisa mencapai ratusan tahun. Para ilmuwan menemukan sesuatu yang dinamakan “Sirtuin”, Silent Information Regulator 2 (Sir2) proteins dan reveratrol, zat antioxidan yang terdapat pada anggur merah.

Sebuah obat dengan kode SRT 1720 yang katanya lebih kuat dari resveratrol telah ditemukan para ilmuwan.

10. Singularity.

Di masa depan akan ada rekayasa genetika pada manusia yang akan memiliki fisik dan kecerdasan yang hampir sempurna.

Jika ada sebuah komputer kuantum dan nanoteknologi akan memungkinkan manusia untuk masuk Quantum partikel Komputer berukuran ke otak dan penggunaan nanopartikel untuk memperkuat tubuh manusia. Ini adalah gabungan antara biologi dan teknologi
